TOP ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES

  1. Narus Valley

A wildlife magnet thanks to its permanent water,Narus Valley is the prime spot for game drives. Expect to see elephants, buffalos, giraffes (including Rothschild’s), zebras, Uganda Kob. Additionally, predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas gather along the valley floor.

  1. Mount Morungole & IK Community

Rising to about 2,750 m, Mount Morungole offers panoramic views of the park. Guided hikes lead visitors to the summit where the indigenous Ik people live. This indeed allows for both cultural exchange and wildlife spotting on the mountain slopes.

  1. Kanangorok Hot Springs

Located around 11 km past Kidepo River toward the South Sudan border, these springs shoot scalding 50 °C water believed by locals to have healing properties. The springs offer a surreal setting surrounded by palm-lined valleys and also searing wilderness.

WHAT WILDLIFE TO EXPECT IN KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Mammals

  • Kidepo is home to around 86 89 mammal species, with 28 species found nowhere else in Uganda such as cheetah, bat eared fox, caracal, striped hyena, aardwolf, and greater and lesser kudu
  • Big game presence includes the Big Four (buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard) plus Rothschild’s giraffe and Burchell’s (plains) zebra, especially the maneless subspecies unique to Kidepo
  • Antelope varieties: frequent sightings include kudu, Jackson’s hartebeest, eland, Uganda Kob, oribi, Guenther’s dik‑dik, Bohor reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, klipspringer, oribi, bushbuck, waterbuck, and Jackson’s hartebeest
  • Smaller mammals: look for bushpig, warthog, bush duiker, Senegal galago (bush baby), white-tailed mongoose, and also patas monkey

Carnivores & Predators

  • Four of the Big Five are present (all except rhino). Cheetahs are the only park in Uganda where they are regularly seen; other predators include lion, leopard, spotted hyena, bat-eared fox, caracal, aardwolf, and both stripped and black-backed jackals
  • Notably,African wild dogs occasionally cross into Kidepo from South Sudan but are not resident
  • Crocodiles (West African or Nile) inhabit Narus River pools in the dry season, reaching up to 2.5 m in length

  • Notable sightings:
    • Ostrich (Uganda’s only wild population),
    • Secretary bird, Kori bustard, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Clapperton’s francolin, rose-ringed parakeet, Karamoja apalis, black-breasted barbet, pale chanting goshawk, pygmy falcon, and various kestrels, eagles, and vultures

Budget / Basic Comfort s Options

1.Apoka Rest Camp (UWA‑run)

  •  Managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority; includes 16 self-contained chalets with en-suite bathrooms, and 14 non‑self‑contained bandas with shared facilities. Notably, you have an option to camp with your own gear or hire a tent on-site.

2.Kakine Self‑Catering Campsite

  •  Basic campsite with shared toilets and water. Bring your own food and also gear; cooking help can be arranged.

 

Midrange

1.Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp

  • About 5 self-contained rooms or safari tents with private terraces. Offers a restaurant, laundry, secure parking, and also evening campfires. Located on a rocky ridge overlooking Narus Valley.

2.Kidepo Savannah Lodge

ACCESS AND LOGISTICS

The most common route to Kidepo by road is a roughly 571 km, ~10‑hour journey from Kampala via Karuma, Gulu, and Kitgum requiring a 4×4 vehicle for the final unpaved stretch to Apoka, with shorter but less frequent alternatives via Lira or Moroto

Scheduled domestic flights by Aerolink Uganda (also served by Fly Uganda, Eagle Air, or BAR Aviation) operate roughly twice weekly (typically Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays), departing Entebbe or Kajjansi around 12:30pm and arriving Apoka (Kidepo) Airstrip by 2:45pm, with the return flight departing at 3:00pm and landing back around 4:30pm, making the journey a convenient  2 hour alternative to the long road trip.

TIPS FOR KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

 Always bring plenty of bottled or boiled water tap water isn’t safe in rural areas, and also dehydration in the dry, hot conditions is a real risk.

Choose neutral, breathable attire bright colors attract insects; long sleeves and also insect repellent help fend off mosquitoes and tsetse flies.

Book accommodations, flights, and alsopark permits well in advance Kidepo is remote with very limited availability at lodges and cottages.
