Established in 1952 (originally gazetted as a reserve in 1926), Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park, covering approximately 3,840 km², expanding to ~5,072 km² when including Bugungu and Karuma reserves
Bisected north south by the Victoria Nile, the River Nile is forced into a narrow gorge thus creating the thunderous Murchison Falls, known as “the world’s most powerful waterfall”
The park’s diverse habitats include savannahs, riverine forests, woodlands, banks of the Nile, and tropical jungle in Budongo and Rabongo forests
It supports at least 144 mammal species, including four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo) rhinos are absent in the park proper but can be seen at nearby Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Notable faunas include Rothschild’s giraffe, Uganda Kob, warthog, hartebeest, oribi, chimpanzees in Budongo Forest, hippos, Nile crocodiles, and primates such as vervet, colobus, and baboons
With 450+ bird species, Murchison is indeed a top birding destination spot with shoebill stork, grey crowned crane, giant heron, fish eagle, Abyssinian ground hornbill, bustards, and more
