Rwenzori Mountains National Park lies in western Uganda on the border with the DRC .Notably, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning nearly 1,000 km², where guests embark from Kasese into mist shrouded montane rainforest teeming with primates, forest elephants, blue monkeys, and Rwenzori colobus, ascend through five distinct vegetation zones bamboo forest, giant heathers, Afro alpine moorland with lobelias and groundsels encounter glacier fed lakes like Bujuku and cascading waterfalls, summit Margherita Peak at 5,109 m, and immerse in cultural exchanges with the Bakonzo people at Ruboni via storytelling, traditional music and basket weaving
Established as a national park in 1991 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Notably,the Rwenzori is celebrated for its snow capped tropical peaks, glacial systems, clear lakes, waterfalls, and extraordinary botanical diversity.
Hosts around 70 mammal species, including forest elephants, chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, forest hog, duikers, hyrax, leopards, and the rare Rwenzori duiker and Avifauna includes 217 bird species, among them 19 Albertine Rift endemics such as Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori batis, golden winged sunbird, handsome francolin, long eared owl, cinnamon chested bee eater, and more .Also home to endemic amphibians (like the Rwenzori frog) and reptiles such as three-horned chameleons
The main gateway is Kasese, about 25 km from park HQ. Access is via road (5–6 hours from Kampala to Kasese via Fort Portal or Mbarara) or by charter flight from Entebbe to Kasese airstrip, followed by approximately 90 minutes drive to trailheads like Nyakalengija
