Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – Uganda

Bwindi Forest is a world heritage site by UNESCO. This forest alone has four sectors for gorilla trekking and these are; Ruhija, Buhoma, Nkuringo and Rushaga. And each sector has several gorilla families. Out of about 1063 gorilla individuals remaining in the wild, more than half reside in Bwindi Forest. This makes it the best place for gorilla trekking. The cost of a gorilla trekking permit for Bwindi is 700 USD per person. Whereas the cost of Gorilla Habituation experience is USD 1500 per person.

Mgahinga Gorilla National park – Uganda

This park lies in the south west of Uganda in the Virunga volcanoes. It is home to mountain gorillas and also some other primates including the golden monkeys, vervet monkeys, olive baboons and so on. Golden monkey trekking also takes place here. Its strategic location in the Virunga volcanoes makes it famous for hiking the three volcanoes; Sabinyo, Muhabura and Mufumbira. The cost of gorilla trekking permits for this park also cost USD 700 each.

Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda

It lies about 1.5 hours drive from Kigali the capital of Rwanda. Volcanoes National park is the perfect place for those who have limited time but want to see gorillas in their natural habitat. Here you trek gorillas and golden monkeys, hike Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes. Similarly, you can explore the Musanze caves, experience the Rwandan culture by Gorilla guardians village among others. Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost USD 1500 each.

While on a gorilla trekking expedition, it is notably important to support the local community by hiring a porter. They normally cost between 10 to 20 USD per person. They do a really great job in supporting you in the muddy valleys and hills in the forest. And it also makes them appreciate the value of tourism. Remember these were indigenous inhabitants of these dense forests before they became protected areas.
